Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, TOCHEW (V463C) is comparable across samples.
Comparability - Standard DHS
Questions involving tobacco use are included in the standard DHS questionnaire beginning in Phase IV. TOCHEW (V463C) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase V forward.
Phases V and VI asked, "Do you currently smoke cigarettes?" with the follow-up questions, "Do you currently smoke or use any other type of tobacco? What other type of tobacco do you currently smoke or use?" In Phase VII, the question wording changed to "Do you currently smoke cigarettes every day, some days, or not at all?" with the follow-up question, "Do you currently smoke or use any other type of tobacco every day, some days, or not at all? What other type of tobacco do you currently smoke or use?"
In Phases V through VII, a follow-up question asking about what type of tobacco the respondent uses includes "Chewing tobacco" as a standard response category.
