Description

For women who gave birth in the last five years, DELET4_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a nurse gave delivery care for a recent birth. This response category is country-specific to Ethiopia.

DELET4_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELET4_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELET4_02, DELET4_03, DELET4_04, DELET4_05, and DELET4_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELET4_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Some samples in the "DEL" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

DELET4_ALL is combined with DELET5_ALL (midwife) for the 2016 and 2019 Ethiopia samples to create the standard variable DELNURM_ALL (nurse/midwife). IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DELET4_ALL are encouraged to review DELNURM_ALL for this more comprehensive response category.

DELET4_01 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about who provided delivery care is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although DELET4_ALL is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in DELNURM_ALL, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of delivery care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of DELET4_ALL or the Comparability tab of DELNURM_ALL for more information on the specific categories combined for Ethiopia 2016 amd 2-10.
