Codes and Frequencies
Description
ETHNICITYNP is a variable specific to Nepal that reports responses to a question about the respondent's caste or ethnicity. A broad range of ethnic groups are identified, with the degree of detail and number of categories varying across survey years.
Comparability
Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, ETHNICITYNP varies across samples in the number and specific types of ethnic groups reported.
To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to reflect the major categories and subgroups within categories in the original DHS variable. The major categories are:
- 1000: Brahaman/Chhetri
- 2000: Tarai/Madhesi other castes
- 3000: Dalits
- 4000: Newar
- 5000: Janajati
- 6000: Muslim
- 7000: Other
The second, third, and fourth digits of ETHNICITYNP's codes distinguish between specific subgroups and provide detail present only in some samples.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
