Description
RELATEMN (MV150) reports the man's relationship to the head of the household, based on a question in the household questionnaire.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences, slight variation in "other" relationship categories (for more distant relatives and non-relatives), and minor differences in question wording, RELATEMN (MV150) is comparable across samples. See the Survey Text tab for the exact wording of the question and response categories.
To maximize comparability across samples using broad "other" categories, IPUMS-DHS uses 2-digit composite coding. The first digit indicates similar relationship categories (for example, a "2" for "other relatives"), while the second digit preserves additional detail (such as "21" for "niece or nephew by blood" versus "22" for "niece or nephew by marriage").
