Description
For children with a fever or difficult or rapid breathing in the past 2 weeks, FEVTRPK11 indicates, in response to an open-ended question, whether the child received treatment from a community midwife. This response category is country-specific to Pakistan.
Some samples in the "FEVTR" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
In the 2017 Pakistan sample, FEVTRPK11 is combined with FEVTRPK3 (homeopath), FEVTRPK4 (hakim), and FEVTRPPK5 (dai/traditional birth attendant) in FEVTRPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers). IPUMS-DHS users interested in using FEVTRPK11 are encouraged to review FEVTRPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category for the 2017 Pakistan sample.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, FEVTRPK11 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about where treatment was sought for the child's fever/cough is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase II forward.
Although FEVTRPK11 is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in FEVTRPRIVHL, a standard variable that encompasses all traditional healers/practitioners as sources of fever/cough treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of FEVTRPK11 or the Comparability tab of FEVTRPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for Pakistan 2017.
