Description

HCMIA13 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported a private AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to India.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMIA13 (private AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy)) is combined with HCMIA12 (private traditional therapist) in HCMPRIVHL (all traditional healers and herbalists) for the 2019 India sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMIA13 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMIA13 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.

Although HCMIA13 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHL, a variable that encompasses all traditional healers and herbalists as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMIA13 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for India 2019.
