Description
For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADGM4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from some other NGO in the health sector for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Gambia.
Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
STIADGM4 is combined with STIADGM1 (NGO hospital/clinic), STIADGM2 (NGO mobile clinic), and STIADGM3 (NGO family planning clinic) in STIADNGO (all NGOs) for the 2013 Gambia sample.
IPUMS DHS users interested in using STIADGM4 are encouraged to review STIADNGO for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
STIADGM4 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V, and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Although STIADGM4 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADGM4 or the Comparability tab of STIADNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2013 Gambia sample.
