Description
For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADSHOPYN indicates whether they sought advice or treatment from a shop or pharmacy for this problem.
IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Comparability tab and should be careful to distinguish this variable from STIADSHOP, STIADPUBDRUG, and STIADPRIVDRUG.

Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight variation in question wording, STIADSHOPYN is largely comparable across most samples.
Most commonly, the surveys ask a series of closed-ended questions about specific sources of advice/treatment for STIs, using the following wording:
Surveys that diverge from this convention are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about where the woman sought advice/treatment for an STI in the last 12 months is first included in Phase III, V, and VI of the standard DHS questionnaire. However, STIADSHOPYN and the convention of asking closed-ended questions about sources of STI treatment only appear in Phase IV of the Standard DHS. Given the different methods of obtaining this information across phases, samples from Phase IV are not combined with samples from Phases III, V, and VI.
Comparability — Cameroon [top]
In the 2004 Cameroon survey, the question format is open-ended rather than a direct listing with a yes/no response. Additionally, the survey form does not designate a response category for "shop/pharmacy," so this variable was probably made after many respondents mentioned "shop/pharmacy" in the "other" response category.
