Codes and Frequencies
Description
AGLANDAMT2 reports the amount of agricultural land owned by the household, in full hectares. Thus, a value of "0" means less than 1 full hectare of agricultural land owned; a value of "2" means 2 hectares; and a value of "20" means 20 hectares.
The related variable AGLANDAMT1 (HV245) reports the amount of agricultural land owned by the household in terms of tenths of a hectare. Thus, for AGLANDAMT1, a value of "2" means two-tenths of a hectare of agricultural land owned, and a value of "20" means 2 hectares. By grouping responses from AGLANDAMT1 (e.g., grouping cases coded 20 to 29 in AGLANDAMT1 to equal a code of 2 in AGLANDAMT2), researchers can combine samples appearing in these two variables.

Comparability
Apart from universe differences, AGLANDAMT2 is comparable across most samples. Samples differing significantly from the norm, in terms of their top-coded values or universes, are discussed below.
Survey forms collected information using various local units of measurement, such as acre, jerib, feddan, kirate, plots, and football pitches, as well as hectares. The DHS Program converted responses into hectares as a standardized unit of measurement when creating the standard variable HV245.
Comparability - Standard DHS
HV245 is a standard household variable for DHS Phase V forward.
Comparability — Ghana [top]
The 2008 Ghana survey top-coded this variable at 38 hectares.
Comparability — Nepal [top]
The 2006 Nepal sample top-coded this variable at 27 hectares.
While most samples restricted this variable's universe (to whom the question applies) to those who acknowledged owning agricultural land in a preceding question, this was not the case for the 2006 Nepal survey. Researchers may wish to restrict the sample to cases with an affirmative answer in the variable AGLANDYN to increase comparability with other samples.
