Description
AIDKNOWONE (V775) indicates whether the woman personally knows someone who currently has (or is suspected to have) HIV/AIDS or knows someone who died of AIDS. How the question was phrased varied across samples. See Comparability.
The related variable AIDKNOWHAS indicates whether the female respondent knows someone who currently has HIV/AIDS only.
The related variable AIDKNOWDIED indicates whether the female respondent knows someone who has died of AIDS only.

Comparability
Along with universe differences, AIDKNOWONE (V775) has differences in question wording that limit comparability. The standard DHS questionnaire includes two related questions:
The various samples including this variable may mention persons suspected of having HIV/AIDS, persons who have HIV/AIDS, and/or persons who died of AIDS.
The more categories mentioned, the more opportunities there are for respondents to give an affirmative response for this variable. See Survey Text for the exact wording used in each sample.
The related variable AIDKNOWONE2 serves as a check on the accuracy of responses to earlier questions about knowing someone with AIDS/HIV who may have experienced discrimination.

As noted, AIDKNOWONE (V775) appears with different wording in Phases IV and V of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Benin [top]
The 2001 Benin survey asks about knowing someone who has the virus that causes AIDS or who died of AIDS. The 2006 Benin survey asks about knowing someone who is suspected to have or has the AIDS virus.
Comparability — Ethiopia [top]
The 2000 Ethiopian sample asks about knowing someone who has the virus that causes AIDS or who died of AIDS. The 2005 Ethiopian sample refers to someone who is suspected to have the AIDS virus or who has the AIDS virus.

The 2000 Namibia survey asks about knowing someone who has the virus that causes AIDS or who died of AIDS. The 2006 Namibia survey asks about knowing someone who is suspected to have or has the AIDS virus.
