Description
For women who gave birth in the last five years, ANCAREBF2_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported that a midwife gave antenatal care for a birth. This response category is country-specific to Burkina Faso.
ANCAREBF2_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCAREBF2_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCAREBF2_02, ANCAREBF2_03, ANCAREBF2_04, ANCAREBF2_05, and ANCAREBF2_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCAREBF2_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
Some samples in the "ANCARE" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
ANCAREBF2_ALL is combined with ANCAREBF1_ALL (nurse) for the 1998 and 2010 Burkina Faso samples to make the standard variable ANCARENURM_ALL. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCAREBF2_ALL are encouraged to review ANCARENURM_ALL for this more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
ANCAREBF2_ALL has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about who provided antenatal care is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Though ANCAREBF2_ALL is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in ANCARENURM_ALL, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of antenatal care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of ANCAREBF2_ALL or the Comparability tab of ANCARENURM_ALL for more information on the specific categories combined for Burkina Faso 1998 and 2010.
