Description

For women who gave birth in the last five years, ANCAREBJ1_01 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported that a nurse gave antenatal care (for the last birth). This response category is country-specific to Benin.

Some samples in the "ANCARE" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

ANCAREBJ1_01 (nurse) is combined with ANCAREBJ2_01 (midwife) for the 2017 Benin sample to make the standard variable ANCARENURM_01 (nurse or midwife). IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCAREBJ1_01 are encouraged to review ANCARENURM_01 for this more comprehensive response category.

Although ANCAREBJ1_01 is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in ANCARENURM_01, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of antenatal care.
