Codes and Frequencies
Description
For women who are currently pregnant, ANCARENOW (V403) reports the type of health care personnel (if any) who gave prenatal care for the current pregnancy. Response categories vary across samples. See Comparability.
Comparability
Along with universe differences, ANCARENOW (V403) differs across samples in response categories. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses a composite coding system, in which nurse, midwife, and birth attendant share a common first digit of 2 and the second digit differentiates between these responses. According to the DHS Recode Manual for Phase I, "... in many surveys, no differentiation is made between trained nurses and trained midwives."
The category "Other" is sample-specific and must be considered relative to enumerated categories in the sample.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ANCARENOW (V403) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 1 only.
