Description
For women who gave birth in the last five years, ANCARESN1_01 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a nurse or an ICP ("infirmier chef de poste" or health post head nurse) gave antenatal care (for the last birth). This response category is country-specific to Senegal.
Some samples in the "ANCARE" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
ANCARESN1_01 is combined with ANCARESN2_01 (midwife) for the 2005, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 Senegal samples to make the standard variable ANCARENURM_01 (nurse/midwife). IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCARESN1_01 are encouraged to review ANCARENURM_01 for this more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
ANCARESN1_01 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about who provided antenatal care is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Although ANCARESN1_01 is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in ANCARENURM_01, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of antenatal care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of ANCARESN1_01 or the Comparability tab of ANCARENURM_01 for more information on the specific categories combined for Senegal 2005, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019.
