ANCEG5_ALL variables are 1-digit variables.
0 = No
1 = Yes
8 = Missing
9 = NIU (not in universe)
Description
For women who gave birth in the last 5 years and who received antenatal care during a pregnancy, ANCEG5_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported receiving such care from the "CSI Project" (Clinical Service Improvement project). This response category is country-specific to Egypt.
ANCEG5_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCEG5_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCEG5_02, ANCEG5_03, ANCEG5_04, ANCEG5_05, and ANCEG5_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCEG5_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
Some samples in the "ANC" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
ANCEG5_ALL is combined with ANCEG6_ALL (other NGO) in ANCNGO_01 (all NGOs) for the 2005, and 2008, and 2014 Egypt samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCEG5_ALL are encouraged to review ANCNGO_01 for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
ANCEG5_ALL has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on where antenatal care was sought is included in Phase V forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Although ANCEG5_ALL is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in ANCNGO_01, a variable that encompasses all nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) as sources of antenatal care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of ANCEG5_ALL or the Comparability tab of ANCNGO_01 for more information on the specific categories combined for Egypt 2005, 2008, and 2014.
