Description

For women who gave birth in the last 5 years and who received antenatal care during their most recent pregnancy, ANCIA4_01 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported receiving care from a primary health center. This response category is country-specific to India.

Some samples in the "ANC" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

ANCIA4_01 is combined with ANCIA3_01 (urban health center), ANCIA5_01 (sub-center), and ANCIA6_01 (village clinic by ANM) in ANCPUBHC_01 (all public health centers) for the 2019 India sample. IPUMS DHS users interested in using ANCIA4_01 are encouraged to review ANCPUBHC_01 for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

ANCIA4_01 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on where antenatal care was sought is included in Phase V forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although ANCIA4_01 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in ANCPUBHC_01, a variable that encompasses all public health centers as sources of antenatal care.
