ANKNOWOTH is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Afghanistan [top]
The 2015 Afghanistan survey asks an open-ended question about symptoms during pregnancy indicating the need to seek immediate care.
Comparability — Bangladesh [top]
The 2000 Bangladesh survey first asks an open-ended question about complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and after delivery that require medical treatment. This is followed by a series of closed-ended (yes/no) questions asking whether the respondent has heard of the specific complications.
The 2004 Bangladesh survey asks an open-ended question about complications during pregnancy, delivery, and after delivery that may cause death to the mother.

The 2001 Uganda survey asks an open-ended question about symptoms that indicate a pregnancy may be in danger.
