ANSYMREL_ALL variables are 1-digit variables.
0 = No
1 = Yes
7 = Don't know
8 = Missing
9 = NIU (not in universe)
Description
ANSYMREL_ALL indicates whether the woman sought advice or treatment from a relative or relatives for pregnancy complications.
ANSYMREL_ALL consists of separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANSYMREL_01) and, in some cases, additional births, up to, potentially, the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANSYMREL_02, ANSYMREL_03, ANSYMREL_04, ANSYMREL_05, and ANSYMREL_06).
Some samples in the "ANSYM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, such as ANSYMREL_ALL, while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of public hospitals that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability
In addition to universe differences, ANSYMREL_ALL varies slightly in question wording. Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Other person" header and is worded as "relatives." However, some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated in ANSYMREL_ALL to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ANSYMREL_ALL is a country-specific variable, and is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Bangladesh [top]
The 2000 and 2007 Bangladesh surveys ask specifically about where the woman sought assistance for complications during delivery.
Comparability — Morocco [top]
In the 2003 Morocco survey, there are three separate categories for "mother," "husband," and "other relative." Because ANSYMREL_01 focuses on all relatives, these three responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving the country-specific categories:
- Mother is listed as ANSYMMA1_01 in IPUMS-DHS
- Husband is listed as ANSYMMA2_01 in IPUMS-DHS
- Other relative is listed as ANSYMMA3_01 in IPUMS-DHS
Universe
- Bangladesh 2007: Ever-married women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey.
- Morocco 2003: Women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey.
