Comparability
Along with universe differences, the response categories for ATWHERE vary across samples.
The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable ATWHERE were constructed to reflect the major and minor categories in the original DHS variable (V784). The major categories are:
- 100: Public sector facilities
- 200: Private medical sector facilities
- 300: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
- 400: Religious/mission facilities
- 500: Other
The second and third digits of ATWHERE's codes distinguish between specific locations and provide detail present in only some samples.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ATWHERE (V784) is included in Phase IV of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Beginning in Phase V, respondents were allowed to provide more than one location. These responses can be found in the "AT" series ("Place for HIV test").
Comparability — Rwanda [top]
The 2000 Rwanda survey allowed respondents to provide more than one location. If the respondent gave only one location, that location is reported in ATWHERE. If the respondent gave more than one location, they are coded "990" in ATHWERE ("Multiple responses") and the locations are reported in the "AT" series ("Place for HIV test").

- Nigeria 2003: Women age 15-49 who have heard of HIV/AIDS and know of a place to get an HIV/AIDS test.

- Tanzania 2004: Women age 15-49 who have been tested for HIV/AIDS whose most recent HIV/AIDS test was not during an antenatal visit.
- Zambia 2001: Women age 15-49 who have heard of HIV/AIDS and know of a place to get an HIV/AIDS test.
