Description
AUTOBIKE indicates whether any member of the household has a bicycle or similar two-wheeled vehicle with additional features, such as automatic transmission to shift gears (an Autobike) or a supplemental energy source (such as a Tempo hybrid bicycle, which uses an electric battery to complement manual pedaling, or a CNG vehicle run on compressed natural gas).
The related variable BIKEHH (HV210) indicates whether any member of the household has a standard bicycle.
The information in AUTOBIKE is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2") when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis, and using the RESIDENTMN variable when men are the unit of analysis.

AUTOBIKE is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS household questionnaire.
Comparability — Bangladesh [top]
The 2011 Bangladesh survey asks whether the household has "an autobike." The 2014 Bangladesh survey asks about "Tempo" and "CNG" bikes as well.
Comparability — Nepal [top]
The 2011 and 2016 Nepal surveys ask whether the household has a "three-wheel tempo."
Comparability — Nigeria [top]
The 2018 Nigerian survey asked whether any member of the household owned "keke napep" (three-wheeled tricycle).
