Codes and Frequencies
Description
For women who have been told by a doctor that she has high blood pressure or hypertension, BPSMOKE indicates whether she is currently stopping smoking to lower her blood pressure.
Comparability
Along with universe differences, BPSMOKE varies across samples in the allowed response categories, sometimes including "not applicable" as well as "yes" and "no." To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses a common first digit of "1" for both non-affirmative ("no" and "not applicable") responses, and distinguishes between "no" and "not applicable" in the second digit of the harmonized codes.
Comparability - Standard DHS
BPSMOKE is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
