Description
CALCONTR_CHANGE is a dichotomous variable (0 for no, 1 for yes) indicating whether the woman began, during that woman-month, to use a different method of contraception than she used during the preceding month. If a woman was using no method of contraception during the preceding month, CALCONTR_CHANGE is coded "No." If the woman was using the same method of contraception during the preceding month as she used during the current month, then CALCONTR_CHANGE is also coded "No."
The related variable CALCONTR_START has an affirmative response if the woman used a method of contraception different from the method she used during the preceding month (as with CALCONTR_CHANGE). Unlike CALCONTR_CHANGE, CALCONTR_START also has an affirmative response if the woman used a contraceptive method during the current month after using no contraception during the preceding month.
CALCONTR_CHANGE is thus a special (narrower) case of CALCONTR_START, with an affirmative response in CALCONTR_CHANGE only when a different method was used in the previous month.
For information on the type of contraception used during a month, see CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences, CALCONTR_CHANGE is largely comparable across samples.
For discussion of the restrictions on the variable universe for both CALCONTR_CHANGE and CALCONTR_START, see the comparability discussion for CALCONTR_START.
Comparability - Standard DHS
CALCONTR_CHANGE is based on VCAL_1 for women's samples that collected calendar data on contraceptive use.
