For samples that collected information on the type of pregnancy termination, CALMISCAR reports which of the following events occurred during the month:
The related variable CALMISCAR_TOTAL reports the total number of miscarriages women had during the entire calendar period.
All samples with calendar data report whether some unspecified type of pregnancy termination (abortion or miscarriage or stillbirth) occurred during the month, with results given in CALTERM. For most samples, the sum of codes 0 and 1 in CALMISCAR equals the number of affirmative responses in CALTERM; for exceptions, see the country-specific comparability text.
Note that a woman was also pregnant during the month that she had a miscarriage (or other type of pregnancy termination). The month when the miscarriage occurred counts as part of the pregnancy in the following summary variables about the length of a pregnancy:

Apart from universe differences, CALMISCAR is comparable across most samples that collected data on the type of pregnancy termination.
For a few samples, the number of terminations in CALMISCAR does not equal the number of miscarriages plus other types of termination reported in CALMISCAR; see country-specific comparability.
Comparability - Standard DHS
