Description
CALPREG_TOTAL reports how many months women spent pregnant (excluding the months they gave birth or had a pregnancy terminate) during the entire length of the reproductive calendar.
The related variable CALPREG indicates whether a woman was pregnant during a specific woman-month.
In CALPREG_TOTAL, a value of "0" indicates the woman associated with that month had no months of pregnancy during the entire length of the reproductive calendar. A value of 1 or more but less than 99 indicates one month of pregnancy during the reproductive calendar period, two months of pregnancy during the period, and so on.
If a woman experienced one month of pregnancy (for example, in the last month of her calendar record), the monthly values recorded for her in CALPREG are "1," "0," "0", and repeated values of "0" back to the start of the calendar period. However, her single instance of pregnancy with a code of "1" in one month only in CALPREG gets copied over for each woman-month for that woman, as in "1," "1," and "1" throughout the reproductive calendar period, in CALPREG_TOTAL.
In CALPREG_TOTAL, a value of "99" refers to "not in universe" cases for women who had only missing data for every month of the calendar period, for samples that collected data on births, pregnancies, terminations, and contraceptive use. For women with at least one month of meaningful response during the calendar period, the number of months of pregnancy copies over to every calendar month for the woman, including those months that had a missing response in CALPREG.
For the explanation of the high number of "not in universe" cases in CALPREG_TOTAL for some samples, see the country-specific comparability text.
For samples that recorded information on births, pregnancies, and pregnancy terminations only, a "B" (missing) value for a month in the original DHS source data can mean either "some other event, such as family planning use, occurred" or "missing or not in universe." For this subset of samples, a "B" code for a month contributes another case to "No pregnancy during woman-month" (code 0) in CALPREG.

Comparability
Apart from universe differences, CALPREG_TOTAL is largely comparable across samples.
Comparability - Standard DHS
CALPREG_TOTAL is based on the string variable V_CAL1 for women's samples that collected calendar data.
