CALREASON (CALREASON)
Reason for discontinuation of contraceptive

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

CALREASON reports why the woman stopped using a contraceptive method. The rationale for stopping use of a method was recorded for the final month of a spell of continuous use of that method.

Only samples that collected information on contraceptive use and reasons for stopping use of a method are included in CALREASON. For a month to be included and have a non-NIU/non-missing value in CALREASON:

1) Contraceptive use was recorded for that month (i.e., a value greater than 0 [non-use of contraception] and less than 90 [a specific method of contraception] was reported in CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS).
2) The following month recorded a different, non-missing (not "999") value in CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS.
3) The sample collected information on the reason for discontinuing contraceptive use, and this information was not missing for the last month of a period of continuous use of a contraceptive method.
4) The month was not the final, interview month for the woman (since events after that last month are unknown).

The information in CALREASON was collected if a woman switched to a different contraceptive method the following month, did not use contraception during the following month, or had a birth, pregnancy, or pregnancy termination the following month.

The rationales given for stopping use of a contraceptive method varied to some extent across samples. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS DHS uses composite coding for CALREASON; see comparability text for more information.

While many calendar variables in IPUMS DHS share a single code for "Missing" and "NIU (not in universe), CALREASON supplies separate codes for "Missing response" (code 98) and "NIU (not in universe)" (code 99). Cases coded as "Missing" in CALREASON met all criteria listed above except information on the reason for discontinuing contraceptive use was missing for a specific woman-month meeting all other criteria.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, CALREASON differs across samples in the specific reasons recognized for stopping use of a contraceptive method.

To maximize comparability across samples for this variable, IPUMS DHS uses composite coding, in which related reasons share a common first digit and the second digit provides additional detail. For example, reasons related to specific side effects share a common first digit of "1," while the second digit distinguishes between "Gained weight" (code 11), "Lack of sexual satisfaction" (code 12), and "Created menstrual problem" (code 13). Researchers may wish to combine all two-digit responses that share a common first digit.

Comparability - Standard DHS

CALREASON is based on string calendar data from a variable other than VCAL_1 for women's samples that collected calendar data on contraceptive use and reasons for stopping use of a method.
