Description
CALTERM is a dichotomous variable (0 for no, 1 for yes) indicating whether the woman had a pregnancy termination (i.e., a miscarriage, abortion, or stillbirth) during the calendar month.
The related variable CALTERM_TOTAL reports the total number of pregnancy terminations women had during the entire calendar period.
Some samples with calendar data collected additional detail on the type of pregnancy termination (i.e., abortion, miscarriage, or stillbirth). For these samples, whether a particular type of pregnancy termination (e.g., abortion) occurred during the month is reported (e.g., CALABORT), as is the total number of pregnancy terminations of that type during the calendar period (e.g., CALABORT_TOTAL).
Note that a woman was also pregnant during the month that she had any type of pregnancy termination. For the following summary variables, IPUMS DHS includes the month of termination when calculating the duration of the pregnancy:
