Description
CATTLEYN indicates whether household owned any cattle. In some cases, the question referred specifically to local or indigenous cattle; see Comparability. The complementary variable CATTLENUM reports the number of cattle owned by the household.
The information in CATTLEYN is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Comparability
Along with universe differences, CATTLEYN varies across samples in question wording. For example, some surveys asked specifically about local or traditional cattle. Samples with potential comparability issues are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
CATTLEYN is a country-specific household variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Egypt [top]
The 2005, 2008, and 2014 Egyptian surveys provided examples of cattle (e.g., "buffalo, calf") in the question.
Comparability — Kenya [top]
The 2008 and 2014 Kenyan surveys asked about the ownership of "local cattle (indigenous)."
Comparability — Madagascar [top]
The 2008 Madagascar survey asked about the ownership of "zebu cattle." The 2021 Madagascar survey similarly asked about the ownership of "humped cattle" (i.e., zebu cattle).
Comparability — Pakistan [top]
The 2017 Pakistan survey asked about the ownership of "Other cattle (buffalo)," with the "other" distinguishing between these cattle and the preceding mention of "Milk cows or bulls." The 2006 and 2012 Pakistan surveys asked about "buffalo" but not non-milk cattle.

The 2010 and 2014 Rwandan surveys asked about the ownership of "traditional cattle."

The 1998 South African survey asked about the ownership of "sheep or cattle."
