Description

CHIMHOOD (HV240) indicates whether households that cook with an open fire or stove have a chimney or hood for ventilation. Beginning in DHS Phase 8, the question indicates whether the household's cookstove, if a manufactured solid fuel stove or traditional solid fuel stove, has a chimney.

The information in CHIMHOOD is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2") when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, CHIMHOOD (HV240) varies slightly in question wording. Prior to DHS Phase 8, most surveys asked, "Does this (fire/stove) have a chimney, a hood, or neither of these?" Surveys with exceptions to this are noted below.

As noted in the description of the variable, in DHS Phase 8, the question refers to only whether the stove has a chimney (no mention of a hood) applies to only manufactured or traditional stoves that burn solid fuel. Universes and question wording thus differ from Phase 8 and earlier DHS survey Phases, though the standard variable name (HV240) does not change.

Comparability - Standard DHS

CHIMHOOD (HV240) is included in the standard DHS household questionnaire beginning in phase 5. The variable changes meaning and universe, though the name remains the same, beginning in DHS Phase 8.

Comparability — Bangladesh [top]

The 2004 Bangladesh survey asks, "What kind of cooking stove is mainly used in your house?" To increase comparability with other samples, respondents reporting use of a kerosene or gas stove with recoded as "not in universe" for the CHIMHOOD variable.

Comparability — Nepal [top]

The 2022 Nepal survey covers households with "a smokeless improved stove," as well as those with a manufactured solid fuel stove or a traditional solid fuel stove.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The 2006 Ugandan survey asked, "Is this cooking done under a chimney?"
