Comparability
Apart from universe differences, CONUSMAN1 (V761) is largely comparable across samples, apart from some minor differences in question wording, described below.
To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding with "Yes" responses having a first digit of "1." The second digit distinguishes between "Yes, male condom" (code "11") and "Yes, female condom" (code "12"), when this additional information is available.
Comparability - Standard DHS
CONUSMAN1 (V761) first appears in Phase III of the standard DHS questionnaire. In Phase V, the survey format changes, and the question is asked for the woman's last three sexual partners in the last 12 months. The question about condom use with the most recent sex partner is included and consistent in all subsequent phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Benin [top]
The Benin 1996 survey asked the interviewer to check whether the respondent knew what condoms were earlier in the survey. If the respondent did not know, the preface "Some men use a condom, which means that they put a rubber sheath on their penis for sexual intercourse" was provided before asking the question.
The survey words this question as "The last time you had sex with (your husband/live-in partner), was a condom used?" For this sample, then, CONUSMAN1 assumes that the last person the respondent had sex with was her husband/live-in partner.
Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]
The Burkina Faso 1998 survey asked the interviewer to check whether the respondent knew what condoms were earlier in the survey. If the respondent did not know, the preface "Some men use a condom, which means that they put a rubber sheath on their penis for sexual intercourse" was provided before asking the question.
The survey words this question as "Did you use a condom during your last sexual encounter with your husband/the man with whom you live?" For this sample, then, CONUSMAN1 assumes that the last person the respondent had sex with was her husband/live-in partner.
Comparability — Cote d'Ivoire [top]
The Cote d'Ivoire 1994 survey asks two questions to create this variable. First, it asks "Did you use condoms during the sexual relations you had in the last 2 months?" and then asks "Did you use them each time, sometimes, or rarely?"
The 1998 survey asked the interviewer to check whether the respondent knew what condoms were earlier in the survey. If the respondent did not know, the preface "Some men use a condom, which means that they put a rubber sheath on their penis for sexual intercourse" was provided before asking the question. The 1998 survey words this question as "Did you use a condom during your last sexual encounter with your husband/the man with whom you live?" For this sample, then, CONUSMAN1 assumes that the last person the respondent had sex with was her husband/live-in partner.
The 2011 survey does not share the 1994 and 1998 surveys' comparability issues.
