DELTRANFW_ALL (DELTRANFW_ALL)
Fieldworker arranged transportation to health facility for delivery

DELTRANFW_ALL variables are 1-digit variables.

Codes

0 = No
1 = Yes
9 = NIU (not in universe)

Description

DELTRANFW_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported that a fieldworker arranged transportation to take the woman to the health facility for delivery.

DELTRANFW_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELTRANFW_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELTRANFW_02, DELTRANFW_03, DELTRANFW_04, DELTRANFW_05, and DELTRANFW_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELTRANFW_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Some samples in the "DELTRAN" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of public fieldworkers that could be combined in DELTRANFW_ALL to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

GENERAL
India

Comparability

DELTRANFW_ALL varies slightly in question wording. Most commonly, this response category is worded as "public fieldworker." Some countries diverge from this standard convention and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interested are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DELTRANFW_ALL is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — India [top]

In the 2019 India survey, there are two separate categories for "accredited social health activist (ASHA)" and "health worker." Because DELTRANFW_ALL focuses on all fieldworkers, these two responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

Universe

  • India 2019: Women age 15-49 who gave birth at least twice in the 5 years before the survey, delivered the second-to-last born child in a health facility, and did not travel on foot to the health facility.
