Description

DELTRANTYPE_ALL reports the mode of transportation the female respondent used to reach the health facility for delivery.

DELTRANTYPE_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELTRANTYPE_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELTRANTYPE_02, DELTRANTYPE_03, DELTRANTYPE_04, DELTRANTYPE_05, and DELTRANTYPE_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELTRANTYPE_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, DELTRANTYPE_ALL has no comparability problems.

The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable DELTRANTYPE_ALL were constructed to reflect the major and minor categories in similar DHS variables. The major categories are:

  • 100: Motorized vehicle
  • 200: Non-motorized

The second and third digits of DELTRANTYPE_ALL's codes distinguish between specific modes of transportation and provide detail present in only some samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DELTRANTYPE_ALL is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS women's questionnaire.
