DELWHR_ALL variables are 2-digit variables.
10 = Hospital or clinic
11 = Hospital
12 = Clinic
20 = Home
30 = Other
98 = Missing
99 = NIU (not in universe)
Description
For women who gave birth in the last five years, DELWHR_ALL indicates where the delivery took place, in terms of broad categories.
The related variable DELPL_ALL (M15_x) indicates where the child's delivery took place.
DELWHR_ALL consists of a set of six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELWHR_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELWHR_02, DELWHR_03, DELWHR_04, DELWHR_05, and DELWHR_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELWHR_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
For surveys including this question, information for this variable was collected on all births, up to a maximum of six, in the reference period. In many cases, data were hypothetically collected on up to six births, but no women in the survey had so many births (e.g., no woman had 4 or more births in 3 years, or had 5 or 6 births in 5 years). If, for example, no woman in a survey had 6 births in five years and only blank values were included in the original DHS file, then DELWHR_06 would not be available for that survey in IPUMS-DHS.
Surveys in which the data were collected for only the most recent births are noted in the comparability section.
Comparability
In addition to slight differences in question wording, DELWHR_ALL varies in the available response categories. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with "Hospital or clinic" responses having a first digit of "1," and "Home" responses having a first digit of "2." The second digit distinguishes between "Hospital" (code "11") and "Clinic" (code "12"), when this additional information is available.
Comparability - Standard DHS
DELWHR_ALL is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
