Codes and Frequencies
Description
DIVORCINIT reports who initiated the woman's divorce or separation.
Comparability
Along with slight differences in question wording, DIVORCINIT differs across samples in the number of response categories. IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable, to maximize comparability. The first digit of the integrated codes marks broad categories across samples; the second digit supplies detail only sometimes available. For example, all responses related to Family share a first digit of "4," while the second digit distinguishes between the woman's family (code "41") and the man's family (code "42"), when indicated.
Comparability - Standard DHS
DIVORCINIT is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
