Description
DVADECPAY indicates whether the respondent believes a husband is justified in hitting or beating his wife if she refuses to allow her husband to decide how she should use her pay.
Comparability
DVADECPAY has no comparability problems.
Users should be attentive to wording changes across phases, particularly the removal of a prefacing sentence, noted in the "Comparability â Standard DHS" section, below.
Comparability â Standard DHS
DVADECPAY is a country-specific variable that is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire, but it is part of a series of questions about when the woman believes a husband is justified in hitting or beating his wife that is included in Phase IV forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
The Phase IV and V questionnaires word the introductory question as follows: "Sometimes a husband is annoyed or angered by things that his wife does. In your opinion, is a husband justified in hitting or beating his wife in the following situations?"
The Phase VI and VII questionnaires remove the prefacing sentence, and simply ask, "In your opinion, is a husband justified in hitting or beating his wife in the following situations?"
