Description

DVHMEDIA6 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a private AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, or Homeopathy) as the place where she sought help from a doctor or other medical personnel after experiencing physical or sexual abuse. This response category is country-specific to India.

Some samples in the "DVHMED" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

DVHMEDIA6 is combined with DVHMEDIA5 (private traditional practitioner) in DVHMEDPRIVTRAD (all private traditional healers) for the 2019 India sample.

Comparability

DVHMEDIA6 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVHMEDIA6 is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire or standard domestic violence module.

Although DVHMEDIA6 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in DVHMEDPRIVTRAD, a variable that encompasses all private traditional healers as where medical help after abuse was acquired. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of DVHMEDIA6 or the Comparability tab of DVHMEDPRIVTRAD for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2019 India sample.
