Description

DVHMEDPUBHC indicates whether the woman reported a public health center as the place where she sought help from a doctor or other medical personnel after experiencing physical or sexual abuse.

Some samples in the "DVHMED" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of public fieldworkers that could be combined in DVHMEDPUBHC to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability — Index

GENERAL
India

Comparability

DVHMEDPUBHC varies slightly in question wording. Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Public Sector" header and is worded as "public health center." Some countries diverge from this standard convention and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interested are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVHMEDPUBHC is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS women's questionnaire or standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — India [top]

In the 2019 India survey, under the "Public Sector" header, there are three separate categories for "urban health center," "primary health center," and "sub-center." Because DVHMEDPUBHC focuses on all public health centers, these three responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Urban health center is listed as DVHMEDIA9 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Primary health center is listed as DVHMEDIA10 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Sub-center is listed as DVHMEDIA11 in IPUMS-DHS
