Comparability

Apart from slight differences in question wording, DVOSTRAN (D115XA) largely has no comparability problems.

Only samples with potential comparability problems are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVOSTRAN (D115XA) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is based on a question included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

The Nigeria 2013 sample creates this variable from written-in "other" responses on the survey form. The DHS-released data describes this response as an "unknown" person. This could mean a stranger physically hurt the person; alternatively, this could mean that the respondent was hurt under circumstances where they were unable to see the attacker and did not know whether the attacker was a stranger or someone they knew.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 1998 South Africa survey asks about physical violence in the past year and includes "Assailant" as a response category.
