Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPKNIFETH indicates whether the woman's husband/partner ever threatened her with a knife, gun, or other weapon.

Samples containing DVPKNIFETH usually, but not always, contain a complementary variable, DVPKNIFEUSE, about whether the woman's partner attacked her with a weapon.

Still other samples ask a single question about the partner threatening or attacking the woman with a weapon; these samples are covered by the variable DVPKNFTHUSE.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, DVPKNIFETH has no comparability problems.

Maximizing the number of samples analyzed to study intimate partner violence with a weapon requires counting all women with an affirmative answer to any of the following three variables: DVPKNFTHUSE, DVPKNIFETH, and DVPKNIFEUSE. This approach does not allow the analyst to distinguish between threats and attacks with a weapon.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPKNIFETH is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module.
