Description
For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPKNIFEUSE (D105G) indicates whether the woman's husband/partner ever attacked her with a knife, gun, or other weapon.
Samples containing DVPKNIFEUSE usually contain a complementary variable, DVPKNIFETH, about whether the woman's partner threatened her with a weapon.
Still other samples ask a single question about the partner threatening or attacking the woman with a weapon; these samples are covered by the variable DVPKNFTHUSE.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences, DVPKNIFEUSE (D105G) has no comparability problems.
Maximizing the number of samples analyzed to study intimate partner violence with a weapon requires counting all women with an affirmative answer to any of the following three variables: DVPKNFTHUSE, DVPKNIFETH, and DVPKNIFEUSE. This approach does not allow the analyst to distinguish between threats and attacks with a weapon.
Comparability - Standard DHS
DVPKNIFEUSE (D105G) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module.
