Comparability

There are differences in question wording that may limit the comparability of DVPSLAP (D105B) across samples.

All samples that include DVPSLAP ask, at a minimum, whether the woman's husband had slapped her. Several samples ask whether the woman had been slapped or had her arm twisted.

Samples that mention arm twisting in addition to being slapped are noted below.

All other samples mention only slapping. Most of those samples have a separate variable, DVPTWIST (D105J), which indicates whether the woman's arm had ever been twisted by her husband.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPSLAP (D105B) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases IV, V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

In the first version of the domestic violence module, which was used through Phase IV of the standard DHS questionnaire, "Slap you or twist your arm" was part of a single question. In all subsequent versions of the domestic violence module, "Slap you" and "Twist your arm or pull your hair" (DVPTWIST (D105J)) are two separate questions.
