Comparability
The comparability of DVRHOSPITL (D110C) across samples may be limited by both universe differences and by differences in the wording of the associated survey question.
Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
DVRHOSPITL (D110C) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module.
Comparability — Egypt [top]
For most samples, DVRHOSPITL asks whether the woman went to the doctor or to a health center as a result of her husband's/partner's violent actions. However, the Egypt 2005 sample asks whether the woman "went for treatment," without specifying that such treatment came from a doctor or health center.
Comparability — Kenya [top]
The universe for some samples that contain DVRHOSPITL includes women who had ever experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner. However, the Kenya 2003 sample includes women who had ever been married, without necessarily having experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner.
Analysts who wish to improve comparability between the Kenya 2003 sample and other samples may wish to restrict the Kenya 2003 sample by conditioning on a "Yes" response to any one of the following: DVPLSEVER (D106), DVPMSEVER (D107), DVPSEXEVER (D108).
Comparability — Malawi [top]
The universe for some samples that contain DVRHOSPITL includes women who had ever experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner. However, the Malawi 2004 sample includes women who had ever been married, without necessarily having experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner.
Analysts who wish to improve comparability between the Malawi 2004 sample and other samples may wish to restrict the Malawi 2004 sample by conditioning on a "Yes" response to any one of the following: DVPLSEVER (D106), DVPMSEVER (D107), DVPSEXEVER (D108).
