Comparability
Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, EDABSENTWHY differs across samples in the number of response categories. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS DHS uses composite coding for EDABSENTWHY. The first digit distinguishes between broad categories (e.g., "5" for "Financial reasons related to school"), while the second digit supplies additional detail only sometimes available (e.g., "51" for "Problem with school uniform").
