EDUCLVLTZ reports the highest level of school that the respondent attended, within the educational system of Tanzania. This variable is country-specific to Tanzania and reflects the educational system of that country.
In addition to universe differences and slight differences in question wording, EDUCLVLTZ differs across samples in the available response categories. These differences are largely due to changes in the Tanzanian educational system.
To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable. For example, all levels of secondary schooling share a common first digit of "4"; the second digit distinguishes between the "O" level and "A" level secondary schooling.
Comparability - Standard DHS
A question about the highest level of school the respondent has attended is included in every phase of the standard DHS questionnaire. EDUCLVLTZ is a country-specific variable.
