Comparability

ETHNICITYCD (V131CD) is a country-specific variable for the Democratic Republic of the Congo that reports the ethnic group to which the woman belongs. Nine ethnic groups (with codes 01 through 09) are reported for all Congolese samples. The broad "other" categories have some variation. IPUMS-DHS therefore uses a composite coding system, in which broad "other" groups share a common first digit of 1, with specific detail preserved by the code's second digit.
