ETHNICITYCM is a variable specific to Cameroon that reports responses to a question about the respondent's ethnicity. A broad range of ethnic groups are identified, with the degree of detail and number of categories varying across survey years.

Comparability

Along with slight differences in question wording, ETHNICITYCM varies across samples in the number and specific types of ethnic groups reported.

To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to reflect the major categories and subgroups within categories in the original DHS variable. The major categories are:

• 100: Arab-Choa, Peulh, Haoussa, Kanuri
• 200: Biu-Mandara
• 300: Adamawa-Ubangi
• 400: Bantu Southwest
• 500: Grassfields
• 600: Bamilike, Bamoun
• 700: Cotier, Ngoe, Oroko
• 800: Beti, Bassa, Mbam
• 900: Kako, Meka, Pygme
• 1000: Other/abroad

The last two digits of ETHNICITYCM's codes distinguish between specific groups and provide detail present in only some samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
