ETHNICITYMN_ML (MV131ML) is a country-specific variable for Mali that collects information about the ethnic group to which the man belongs. While five ethnic groups (with codes 010 to 050) are reported for all Malian samples, the number and names of other ethnic groups vary across samples. IPUMS-DHS therefore uses a three-digit composite coding system. Other Malian ethnicities share a common first digit of 1; foreigners share a common first digit of 2; and specific detail is provided in the second digit and third digits of the codes.
