Codes and Frequencies
Description
ETHNICITYNG2 is a variable specific to Nigeria that reports responses to a question about the woman's ethnic group or native language. A broad range of ethnic groups are identified, with the degree of detail and number of categories varying across survey years.
The related variable ETHNICITYNG (V131NG) reports the respondent's ethnicity in less detail.
Comparability
Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, ETHNICITYNG2 varies across samples in the number and specific types of ethnic groups reported. See the Codes and Frequencies tab for details.
While many DHS surveys listed response categories for the interviewer to mark for their ethnicity question, the questionnaires for Nigeria 1999, 2003, 2008, and 2013 included only an open-ended question ("What is your ethnic group?") and a blank space for the interviewer to fill in.
The Nigeria 1990 questionnaire asks about the respondent's native language rather than ethnic group.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
