Codes and Frequencies
Description
ETHNICITYNM (V131NM) is a variable specific to Namibia that reports the respondent's ethnicity, based on the main language spoken in the home. The groups identified vary slightly across samples. See Comparability.
Comparability
ETHNICITYNM (V131NM) is a country-specific variable for Namibia that collects information about the ethnic group to which the woman belongs. Unlike other countries' surveys that directly ask about ethnicity, ETHNICITYNM uses a question about the respondent's language to determine her ethnicity.
While eight ethnic groups/languages (with codes 01 through 08) are reported for all Namibia samples, the number of ethnic groups identified varies across samples. IPUMS-DHS therefore uses a composite coding system, in which other groups (beyond the first eight) share a common first digit of "1," with specific detail preserved by the code's second digit.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase II forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
