ETHNICITYSL (V131SL) reports the female respondent's ethnic group, using categories country-specific to Sierra Leone.
GENERAL |
Sierra Leone |
ETHNICITYSL (V131SL) differs across samples in the number of response categories. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable. Responses in the broad two-digit "Other" category share a common first digit of "1," while additional detail is preserved in the second digit (e.g., code "19" for "Other Sierra Leone, unspecified"). Note that the exact meaning of "Other Sierra Leone, unspecified" differs between the 2008 and later surveys, since the 2008 survey included fewer named categories.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ETHNICITY (V131) is a standard variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with country-specific response categories.
In the 2008 Sierra Leone survey, the ethnic group "Creole" was spelled as "Kriole." In the 2013 Sierra Leone survey, the spelling "Creole" was used, which was also adopted by IPUMS-DHS.
