ETHNICITYSN (V131SN) is a variable specific to Senegal that reports the respondent's ethnic group. Responses to this variable differ across samples. See Comparability.
The question wording for ETHNICITYSN (V131SN), "What is your ethnicity?" was consistent across samples, but the response categories included in the questionnaires were not consistent. While five ethnic groups (with codes 01 through 05) are reported for all Senegalese samples, the number of ethnic groups identified generally increased over time. IPUMS-DHS therefore uses a composite coding system, in which other groups (beyond the first five) share a common first digit of "1," with specific detail preserved by the code's second digit.

ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
